UPDATE: Skywater Project Hits Major Milestone

One of Flint River SWCD’s sponsored programs saw a new development in 2023. Skywater, a project plan to restore the water flow through Radium Springs, just completed its draft environmental assessment. In addition to funding, FRSWCD also contributes staff and volunteer time to the project.

Radium Springs is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia, and its waters feed into the larger Flint River. Since the 1980s, the body of water has received little to no water flow during times of drought and rainfall. The USDA also funds the program, while a committee of farmers, scientists, policy experts, environmental advocates, and local government officials oversee the operation.

“Reaching this milestone in the watershed planning process has been incredibly rewarding,” states Perri Cooper, FRSWCD executive director. “For over a year, we have engaged stakeholders, local government, Skywater Project partners, and the public in ensuring we have created a comprehensive plan that will truly be a win-win-win for local residents, the local economy, and our local natural habitats.”

Skywater’s strategy includes setting up measuring devices for water levels and supporting orchard and crop operations in the surface area that feeds the spring. Click here to read the full article.
