Soil Health Management Systems for Row Crops Workshop Was a Success

On Tuesday, July 18, 2023 the Georgia Association of Conservation Districts (GACD) and the Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District (FRSWCD) held a workshop at the Mitchell County Ag Center highlighting soil health management systems in row crops. Several producers from around the area along with various ag industry professionals were in attendance. Leanne Hopper, GACD Southwest GA Program Manager, gave a welcome and introduced the workshop speakers. Useful information on soil health practices tailored to common southwest GA row crops was shared by presenters from all over the state.

“We were pleased to sponsor this event and bring depth of knowledge and resources to local producers,” said Perri Cooper, FRSWCD Executive Director.

Antron Williams with USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) presented on how cover cropping and conservation tillage can improve soil health in cotton, corn, peanut rotations. Marlina Tongue with USDA-NRCS gave information on federal funding programs through NRCS. Mitch Attaway with  Georgia Soil & Water Conservation Commission (GSWCC) spoke about state funding programs. Dinner was provided to attendees and was catered by Kebo's BBQ in Camilla.

“The FRSWCD is making a concerted effort to support producers in efforts to expand their soil health, including purchasing a new No Till Drill available for lease, as well as hiring the District’s first-ever Soil Health Coordinator,” said Cooper.
