The Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District was thrilled to sponsor the annual meeting of the Georgia Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society in Tifton, Georgia March 26-27 in partnership with ADM/ Golden Peanut.

The Flint River SWCD was pleased to join other local conservation districts and partners at the Group 3 meeting on March 12 at the Grand Farm in Perry, Georgia. Thanks to Georgia Association of Conservation Districts for an informative meeting!

On March 24, Perri Cooper, Flint River Soil and Water Executive Director, and Casey Cox Kerr, Mitchell County Supervisor, participated in the inaugural Wetlands Management Field Day at The Jones Center at Ichauway. Participants saw a recently burned wetland and learned about the restoration of geographically isolated wetlands.

Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors selected three recipients of the Agricultural and Environmental Education Grant at the monthly District meeting. Asha Cannon with the Dougherty County 4-H program in Albany, Tracy Champagne at Bainbridge High School and Holly Peek at Byne Christian School in Albany were each awarded $1,000 in funding for specialized and hands-on programming at their schools focused on agricultural and environmental topics.  

To encourage study and careers in soil and water conservation related fields, GACD administers one $1,000 scholarship each year.  The scholarship is given to high school students or undergraduate/graduate students majoring in, or intending to major in, a soil and water conservation related area. Feral swine have become increasingly detrimental in Georgia; the economic impact of damage caused by feral swine in Georgia is estimated at $150 million. A group of agricultural and natural resource organizations are partnering to host a workshop and trapping demonstration on November 19, 2025 in Camilla, GA.

The Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District recently had the privilege of interviewing Samiya Martin, a recent graduate of Westover High School. Through a sponsorship provided by the District, Miss Martin was able to participate in the Youth Agriculture Internship Program through Flint River Fresh—a unique opportunity that blends agriculture, entrepreneurship, and servant leadership.

The Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District was a proud sponsor of the 18th annual 4-H2O event hosted by the Stripling Irrigation Research Park in Camilla, GA on June 25.

On June 18, the Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District hosted the webinar “Using Irrigator Pro for Smarter Irrigation Decisions.” The webinar demonstrated field set up on the desktop and mobile versions of the tool, specific features in field set up including soil series selection, soil moisture data source, soil water holding capacity, and planting date, and highlighted farmer testimonial.

Friday, May 16th was a big day for some very special students — it was graduation day for those taking part in the Veggie Ready Program through Small Bites Adventure Club!

On March 25, 2025, Dutch Ford Farm in Metter, Georgia, welcomed a mix of farmers, conservationists, and agricultural professionals for the third annual Soil Health Field Day, hosted by the Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District (FRSWCD) in collaboration with ADM/Golden Peanut.

On April 26th, local second-grade students experienced Destination Ag, thanks to a partnership between the Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, the Georgia Museum of Agriculture, and Chehaw Park.

On November 7, 2024, 24 farmers and agricultural professionals gathered at the Worth County Ag Pavilion in Sylvester, GA for an insightful and hands-on field day. The event, hosted by the Flint River Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), provided valuable information on sustainable farming practices, focusing on cover crops and pasture improvement.

Cover crops play a vital role in sustainable farming systems, especially in the southeast U.S., where cotton, corn, and peanuts dominate the agricultural landscape. These crops provide numerous benefits, including soil health improvement, erosion control, moisture retention, and enhanced nutrient cycling. However, knowing when and how to terminate cover crops is crucial for maximizing their benefits without negatively impacting subsequent cash crops.  In this blog post, we will explore effective cover crop termination strategies tailored to these rotations.
